About the event
Behaalotecha ("When you raise") opens with Aaron being commanded to light the menorah, followed by the Levites' initiation into Sanctuary service. A "Second Passover" is established for those who were ritually impure and unable to bring the Passover offering on time. God then instructs Moses on travel procedures, and Israel departs Mount Sinai after nearly a year.
The people complain about the manna and demand meat, prompting Moses to appoint 70 elders to share the burden of leadership. The portion closes with Miriam being struck with leprosy for speaking ill of Moses; he prays for her healing, and the community waits seven days until she recovers.
Haftorah
The passage opens with a call to rejoice: God promises to dwell among His people, with many nations joining Israel. Judah and Jerusalem are declared holy and chosen, and all are called to stand in reverent silence before God.
