About the event

The name of the Parshah, "Bamidbar," means "In the desert," reflecting the setting in which all of these events take place.

In the Sinai Desert, G‑d commands Moses to take a census of the twelve tribes of Israel, counting 603,550 men of military age (20–60), while the tribe of Levi β€” numbering 22,300 males from one month old and up β€” is counted separately and assigned to serve in the Sanctuary. The Levites replace the firstborn in this sacred role, as the firstborn were disqualified for their part in worshipping the Golden Calf. The 273 firstborn who had no Levite counterpart to replace them were required to pay a five-shekel ransom to redeem themselves.
