About the event
The name of the Parshah, “Vayikra,” means “And [He] called,” and it is found in Leviticus 1:1.
G-d calls to Moses from the Tent of Meeting and communicates to him the laws of the korbanot, the offerings brought in the Sanctuary. These include the olah (burnt offering), minchah (meal offering), shelamim (peace offering), chatat (sin offering), and asham (guilt offering), along with the procedures by which they are to be brought.
The Haftorah
The haftorah rebukes the Israelites for turning away from G-d, neglecting the Temple’s sacrificial service, and engaging in idolatry. Through the prophet Isaiah, G-d calls on the people to return to Him, promising forgiveness for their transgressions. The prophet also emphasizes the futility of idols made by human hands, which cannot see, hear, or understand. The haftorah concludes with G-d urging Israel to remember Him and return to Him.
