Deuteronomy 3:23–7:11

The name of the Parshah, "Va'etchanan," means "I entreated" and is found in Deuteronomy 3:23.

Moses recounts how he pleaded with the LORD to enter the Promised Land, but God instructed him to view the land from a mountain while Joshua would lead Israel across the Jordan.

Moses urges Israel to remain faithful to God's statutes and reminds them that no other nation has experienced God's mighty acts or heard His voice as Israel did at Mount Sinai. He warns that if the people turn to idolatry they will be scattered among the nations, but if they seek the LORD with all their heart and soul, He will remember His covenant and show them mercy.

The parashah also repeats the Ten Commandments, proclaims the Shema, and commands Israel to love the LORD with all their heart, soul, and strength, to teach His words diligently to their…
