Matot–Masei Summary
The name Matot ("Tribes") is found in Numbers 30:2, and Masei ("Journeys") is found in Numbers 33:1.
Moses teaches the laws regarding the annulment of vows and leads Israel in war against Midian for leading the nation into sin. The spoils of war are carefully divided among the people, the soldiers, the Levites, and the high priest.
The tribes of Reuben and Gad, joined by half the tribe of Manasseh, request the land east of the Jordan because of its rich pastureland. Moses grants their request after they pledge to lead Israel in the conquest of Canaan before returning to their inheritance.
The Torah then recounts Israel's forty-two journeys from Egypt to the plains of Moab, defines the boundaries of the Promised Land, appoints cities of refuge for those guilty of accidental manslaughter, and concludes by requiring the daughters of Tzelafchad to marry within the tribe of Manasseh…
