Parashat Balak β Summary
Parashat Balak (Numbers 22:2β25:9) tells how Balak, king of Moab, feared the growing strength of Israel and hired the prophet Balaam to curse them. On his journey, Balaam's donkey sees an angel sent by God blocking the path and miraculously speaks to warn him. Although Balak repeatedly brings Balaam to different locations to curse Israel, God causes Balaam to bless Israel instead. Balaam also delivers prophecies concerning Israel's future and the ultimate triumph of God's people.
Later, many Israelites are seduced by the women of Moab and Midian and are drawn into the worship of Baal Peor. This leads to a divine plague among the Israelites. When an Israelite leader openly brings a Midianite woman into the camp, Pinchas acts decisively and kills them both, bringing an end to the plague and turning away God's wrath from Israel.
