Devarim in a Nutshell
Deuteronomy 1:1–3:22
The name of the Parshah, "Devarim," means "the words" and is found in Deuteronomy 1:1.
Moses begins his address to the children of Israel, reviewing their forty-year journey from Egypt to the edge of the Promised Land. He reminds them of God's faithfulness, rebukes them for their disobedience, and urges them to keep the Torah and its commandments as they prepare to enter the land the LORD has promised them.
Moses recounts the appointment of judges, the mission of the spies, Israel's refusal to enter the Promised Land, and God's judgment that the generation of the Exodus would not enter the land. He also recalls the journeys around Edom, Moab, and Ammon, Israel's victories over the Amorite kings Sichon and Og, the inheritance given to Reuben, Gad, and half the tribe of Manasseh, and his charge to Joshua: "Do not fear them, for the…
