About the event
Shoftim in a Nutshell
Deuteronomy 16:18–21:9
Shoftim means “Judges.” Moses commands Israel to appoint judges and officers who administer justice without corruption or favoritism. Israel is warned against idolatry, sorcery, divination, and false prophets. Instructions are given for a future king, who must remain humble and obey the Torah. The portion establishes cities of refuge, rules concerning witnesses, and laws of warfare, including offering peace and protecting fruit trees. Shoftim concludes with the eglah arufah procedure for an unsolved murder, emphasizing the responsibility of Israel’s leaders to uphold justice and address innocent blood.
